High-quality ready-made lessons raised maths results
Published research, not one of our clients.
The problem
Middle school maths teachers in three Virginia districts spent a lot of time planning, and lesson quality varied from teacher to teacher.
What they did
In a randomised experiment with 363 maths teachers and more than 27,000 students, some teachers got free access to high-quality, ready-made online lessons. Some also got light support to use them.
The result
Students scored higher in maths, most when teachers also had support (about 0.09 of a standard deviation). Weaker teachers benefited most, and teachers reported better lessons and more time. The researchers judged it more cost-effective than most teacher-quality policies.
What this means for your school
A well-designed, shared curriculum with ready-to-use lessons, plus a little coaching, can lift results across a whole department, especially for newer teachers. That is the core of our curriculum work.
