Coaching teachers works

The problem
Schools spend a great deal on one-off training days, but often see little change in the classroom.
What they did
Researchers combined the results of 60 rigorous studies of teacher coaching, where an expert works with teachers over time, observes lessons and gives specific feedback.
The result
On average, coaching clearly improved teachers' instruction (0.49 of a standard deviation) and raised student achievement (0.18 of a standard deviation). Smaller, focused programmes showed the largest effects.
