Research case study
Better screening finds better teachers
Published research, not one of our clients.
The problem
Washington, DC public schools receive thousands of teacher applications every year. Leaders wanted to know whether their hiring steps actually pick the teachers who do best in the classroom.
What they did
Researchers followed applicants through the district's multi-step hiring process: written assessments, a personal interview and a sample lesson. They then compared each hired teacher's application scores with their later job evaluations.
The result
Applicants' academic background and their scores on the screening steps both strongly predicted how well they later performed as teachers. But the district was not using these signals well: academic background was almost unrelated to who got hired.
What this means for your school
A structured process (a written task, a structured interview and a sample lesson, scored the same way for every candidate) tells you a lot about future performance, if you actually use the scores when you decide. That is how we recruit.
